THAT "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL". Since the first issue of THE TIME-BINDER, with its free usage of this expression, there have been so many comments and so much said about it in varying connotations, that I feel it might not be inappropriate to discuss more at length the way in which I use it, and the real meanings I find in the expression. First, let me say that of course I do NOT mean that all men are created equal physically. N or mentally. Nor economically. Some are still actual slaves; some are economic slaves; some are so poorly equipped mentally and/or physically as to hardly be of the "human" classification. Some men, and this includes women, of course, are the product of a line of inheritance that makes them almost gods to the masses of other people born in the same country. Some are born of parents whose mental abilities must of necessity give them a greater potentiality for greatness than others. In spite of the great strides made in the past century or less, in the emancipation of women, they are still generally regarded as inferior to men, especially in those majority portions of the world which we of America usually call "unenlightened". That keeps women from being "apparently" equal to men. In our own country, we have children born to those of great wealth, who have many advantages of medical and educational attention denied great portions of our population. In countries such as England, we have children born who are the scions of the nobility, who have advantages far greater than those of less noble birth, to say nothing of those "born to the purple". What, then, do I mean when I say "ALL men are created equal? I mean that all men have, or should have, an equality of opportunity to prove their worth to their fellow man. I mean that ALL men, without regard to race, color, creed or other differences, are equals, or should be, in receiving educational advantages to the extent of their ability to assimilate such, and to make use of their education for the benefit of others. I mean that ALL men should have the right to whatever medical or surgical attention is necessary to keep them in the best possible bodily health; that the fact that they are poor should not make it necessary for them to deteriorate in health where a richer person would be cured or helped to recover from the same identical ailment. I mean that ALL men should have the right to labor for the common good, and to receive therefore the fruits of their labor in an amount sufficient to sustain their physical needs, their desire for a decent home, decent clothing, decent food and decent environmental surroundings, plus a few of the luxuries which men need for the enrichment of their lives. 1
