I mean that ALL men are equal before whatever God they desire to worship; or equal in their right not to worship any at all if that is their desire. I mean that ALL men are created equal in the sense that NO MAN SHOULD BE DENIED THINGS THAT ANOTHER IS ALLOWED MERELY BECAUSE HIS SKIN IS PIGMENTED DIFFERENTLY THAN THAT OF OTHERS. I mean that ALL men are created equal in the sense that we are all Brothers; that I AM MY BROTHERS' KEEPER, in the fullest and truest sense of the phrase. Therefore I cannot do anything in any way that would injure my Brother, merely to get for my self of my children things that deprive a Brother of the same right to get and to have those things for himself or his children. When the children were growing, I used to teach them that they had a perfect right to do anything they felt was right -- as long as it did not interfere with the rights of another. I used to use an expression I heard quite a number of years ago --- "I have a perfect right to swing my fist anywhere I please, EXCEPT that my right to swing my fist ends just before your nose begins". It is a good example. It is the true basis of all law. I mean, therefore, in using the expression that "ALL men are created equal", that I believe firmly and earnestly in the Golden Rule. I believe just as firmly in the teaching of Jesus that "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me." When ALL mankind will recognize that ALL men are his brothers; that ALL men have equal rights in all things of every nature; then will we, indeed, come to the full realization of the glorious concept that "ALL men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights". Then, indeed, will we have a just and lasting peace, and a Utopia that will far outshine any we have yet dreamed. The road will be long and hard, full of pitfalls and detours, but I believe that Man will come one day to that highest pinnacle, NOT because it is something that is fore-ordained,but because there is within him a spark of greatness, of nobility , that will not allow him to be satisfied with anything less, and that will keep him fighting evil and selfishness and might until he has reached The City Of Light! - 2 -
