It works just as well with grown-ups except that the time needed for the change is longer. The child has a plastic mind and can be molded quickly into any form. The man has a more settled mind and can be changed but more slowly. It is, however, well worth all that is put into it. ( (This sound psychology has a very important facet that is all too often neglected, however. When we take it upon ourselves thus to interfere and change another's life, it puts a great responsibility upon us. We can't just make the start of a change and then go off and leave him alone to fight his own way. It is up to us to stay on the job and help him complete the change.--EEE) ). I am a Pollyanna, too, EE. No matter what happens my faith cannot be shaken and often people comment upon my "courage". I smile for I know it is not courage but faith and belief in Man that makes my own problems seem not so vitally important. There is only one point in the entire THE TIME-BINDER where I am not in complete accordance with you. It is in the last section upon Statesmanship. We will run into it now more than ever because of the tiredness of everyone. Tired of War, of rationing and ration points, of the seemingly never-ending unhappiness at the loss of loved ones, either in the Army or other armed forces, losses through death or missin gin action. Even those who have lost no one are beginning to bend under the strain. Too long hours of work, and constant reminder of the war through newspapers, newsreels and atrocity stories. It is only natural that such things should accompany war. Many people, E. E., would like to feel the way we do about most things, but they are afraid to. Most of them are so far ahead of the beaten path of thought that it takes a distinct effort of mind and will to assimilate them. Most people are men- 14
