preach that they WOULD give him what they said they would, or did he accept their word as gospel and rest assured and happy that though he didn't know how or when he would get it, yet get it he would? Ask your doubter if he ever kissed a girl he really wanted to kiss. Then ask him, provided his answer was "Yes", why he did it, why he wanted to kiss her. Ask him for scientific proof that will stand on paper and before scientists. Watch him stumble and fall over his own feet, for you can't put your finger on this desire, nor can you put your finger on the results of that kiss. Yet do any of us try to? People, many people that is, think that to pray you have to get down on your knees, clasp your hands, close your eyes, and shut the whole world out. I don't believe that. I admit it is good to shut the world out and concentrate with your whole being to get your prayer across. But have you ever developed the habit of talking to your God as you would to a friend who can help and aid you? In your daily life, at your work, when things go bad for you and nothing else seems to work out right, and you feel your patience slipping and your temper maybe rising up, try and informal little prayer, a request to Him as you would to a friend who has the power to help you. You needn't quit working, nor close your eyes. Just ask Him man to man, straight, for help, but don't demand it. Believe you me it provides a swell outlet and will almost every time at the least squelch that very devilish temper that is in all of us. Many people think God is a person to grovel before. I don't. For years now I have thought of Him not so much as an equal but as a superior being, yet friendly, one you could talk to man to man, meet as a friend, ask for aid, yet do it respectfully and not as an abject slave crawling through the dirt and grime to His very feet. For an illustration, sometimes on a tough job when I have been stumped, I've taken a few minutes off to rest and relax and maybe I'll say "Okay, now, God, how about a little hand here. I am stumped, but if You'll give me a hand everything will be all right". And I have developed such faith that I feel it in my bones that this time I'll find the trouble, and blame it all, the times I do are so out of proportion to the times I don't that I figure it's good proof of the power of prayer or faith or something. But to go ever further in my acceptance of God as a good friend, I've been peeved at times when everything I did on a job went wrong, and each time through some silly little thing that was just enough to get my goat, and I can remember times when I have said something like this: "All right, now, God, you've had your little joke, laughing up your sleeve at me this way. Now how about a hand and let me get this finished, huh?" As you can see I don't get very devout, or load things down with the stuff they do in church, but I think the fact that I accept Him as being this real and this close and this friendly 13
