"THIS 'N' THAT" Volume One...R. Vernon Cook...Number Six A new book has arrived since the last "This 'N' That", "Dark Carnival", by Ray Bradbury, and published by Arkham House. One particular features of the volumes issued by this company, is the consistently good printing and binding, and while I do not care for some of their books, still; they are the results of fine authors and all lovers of fantasy should have them in their library. Mr. Bradbury has started to develop a series of short stories, three of which are in "Dark Carnival", namely; "The Homecoming", "The Traveller", and "Uncle Einar". His slant on the night people and his treatment of their problems and his somewhat sympathetic explanation of their afflictions, strikes me as being very unusual. Not to my knowledge has this ever been done before, at least, not in the same style as Mr. Bradbury has done. Another new volume has been added to my library of fantasy, Jack Snow's "Dark Music" and "Other Spectral Tales". This is the type of weird fiction that I enjoy and especially the style that Mr. Snow uses in his writings. The tales are not long but they have the novelty and interest that counts. I urge all "fans" to obtain this book. "Dark of the Moon", "Poems of Fantasy and the Macabre" in my estimation, the less said the better. "Weird Tales" is on its way up again (I hope) The issue for July is very good, especially the Bradbury tale. "The Will of Claude Ashur", in places; reminds me of Lovecraft, but then Mr. Thompson goes and spoils the illusion. (Thank goodness) While on a visit to my old home in Wyoming a short time ago, I found my first edition of "Moon Pool" was I pleased, I also found my copy of Dracula, old memories return. Not long ago, I received a package in the mail and upon opening it, I found a copy of "Tarrano the Conqueror" which I received as prize in a contest, conducted by Stanley Mullen in "The Gorgon". I prize this most highly as I have always wanted a copy. To the editors of "Tympany" and "The Vortex", this will acknowledge receipt of the copies sent me. Thank you. I have read them with interest and will send in my subscription as soon as "KORNZAKRAKIN" a "Fun Show" I am directing and producing is over. WOW : : : : am I busy???? I really am a very busy man and I would like to receive more "fan-zines". Editors of new publications, send me a sample copy, which I will pay for and if I like your efforts (and I will) will subscribe, you will not lose a penny. Until next month. R. Vernon Cook.
