June 14, 1940 SUN SPOTS Price 5¢ EDITOR[I]AL Well here is another issue of SUN SPOTS. This issue marks the beginning of a new regime, which will introduce a number of changes. First we are no longer the organ of the SOLAROID CLUB, though we will still give some news of their activities; second, we are now a 10 page mimioed mag instead of the former hectoed paper; third, we now have a cover; fourth, we intend to introduce new features from time to time; and last we have raised the price to 5¢ a copy. The latter change, while not being as important to the readers as the others, is by far the most important to us, since we will need the money to bring you more and better issues in the future. We again plea for subscriptions and will also welcome more trades as well as print advertisements. As is mentioned on page 3, the reason this issue is not printed is lack of funds and cooperation from other fans. We do however wish to thank the following fans for their willingness to take ads, if we printed S.S.:Bob Studley of SCIENTIAL, Robert W. Lowndes of SCIENCE FICTION WEEKLY, and Will Sykora of FANTASY NEWS. Also thanks to the following who were kind enough to answer or postcards even if they were unable to take an ad. :Damon Knight, Harry Warner, Jr., Gerald W. Meader, and Alftred J. McKeel..... This issue we present an artical on the possibilities of space travel, entitled "On Space Travel", by Howard Gaetz. This is the first in a series of such articals. Hope you readers enjoy it. All comments on this artical will be welcomed by the author and we will try to answer you.....There is an anti-science fiction artical in the latest issue of HARPER'S. Why not have a gander at it?.. Some people make me sick. Especially the type who ribs you every time Stf is mentioned in a conversation. These kibitzers seem to think all Stf is like Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers, etc. This as all real Stf readers isnot true. These Flash Gordon serials give the movie-goer a false impression of the real Stf. These serials with their put-put rockets, heroic heroes, rotten backgrounds, model settings and above all impossible plots, such as finding people the same as Earthmen on a planet millions of miles distant and worse yet speaking English. I say foo to Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers. On the other hand a few good Stf. films do get shown. The latest and one of the best is "Dr. Cyclops". The photography in this picture is all but foolproof and the color makes it a great production. More pictures like this are needed and I am sure they will be produced. The Food of The Gods, by H.G. Wells will be one of these. Another thing on Stf. is the Chicon. This is getting a big buildup in all fan mags, and in some of the pros., but who is this reaching, but the few hundred dyed in the wool fans and some of the readers of Stf. A lot of these readers don't even know what a fan mag is. In other words this convention while its purpose is for spreading the words of Stf is not reaching more than a few hundred fans. I say publicity is needed more than Stf. Pro. and fan mags. Before I call it quits I want to beg your pardon for any bad mista[kes] in this issue since this is the first time the editors have had real experience with a mimeograph. I only hope you appreciate our attempt. Thanks for yours kind attent[ion] Gerry de la Ree, Jr. Page (4).
