MCGEE'S RETURN For days they travelled over Surveying the canals, and land. And then one day, McGee cried out, "There's a city, without a doubt". Of shining blue steel it was made, The crew were startled and afraid. They all stood back, McGee advanced, A bullet off his space suit glanced. There, on the wall, a Martian stood, All dressed up in a gleaming hood Then McGee made a sign of peace, The Martian's firing then did cease. A massive gate swung open wide, Martians appeared on ev'ry side,. The Martians were of immense size, With little legs and bulging eyes, Their heads were large; their hair was scant, Their bodies shaped like a monstrous ant. The Earthmen made them understand, That they were just a friendly band. They all approached the massive gate: Now or never, they'd learn their fate. Into a shining silver plane, Stepped bold McGee and Jeffry Lane. O'er gleaming sphere and dome they flew, To the chief's dome of shining blue. Into the chief's presence they went: The chief was old, with shoulders bent. He greeted them with a friendly smile, And bade them be seated awhile. After a joyful stay on Mars, The chief gave them some radium bars. McGee and lane together said, "These better be encased in lead" This done they prepared to go Ere the coming of Martian snow. The Martians crowded round the ship, As they got set for the Earthbound trip, Once more the rockets flared bright red, They waved good-bye to the Martian head, Once more the ship leapt into space Headed towards its Earthly base. As weeks passed by, the Earth drew near, They passed into the Atmosphere: A sigh of joy escaped all round, At last ! At last! There was the ground. As soon as he landed McGee caught a train, Which carried him back to dear old Maine. If you want to hear more of McGee's travels write and we'll give them to you..
