[[faded word unreadable]] of a writer and how he might have said thus and so less effedtively", even in high school. Movies definitely yes -- if Sohmaltzless ones can be found or made. And gardening, a little cement work, and so on. It will be needed, come a-bombs. Amen on the music and drawing -- provided it begins with fundamentals. Speer surprises me by omitting any mention of vocational guidance; the British have made it mandatory for all students to have at the ages of 13 and 16 to have aptitude and exterity tests. The first determines their education for the following two years, the second acts as a check against a possible miscue in the first. I read somewhere recently that the average 14-year-old cannot appreciate stuff like "and the Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold". And whatever poetry teaching is included should go very lightly on soanision and schmalz. ************************************** THE HOME STRETCH AT LAST! Back in 1944, when the LASFS got a csae of program-itis, I was asked to talk on amateur radio and science-fiction. Two of the uses I then suggested were: personal contacts between fans, and handling messages connected with fan activities. I've managed to put one of them into practice during the past month-- in fact HAHOPE could not have been produced had I not done so. Two weeks ago I sent a message to Fran Laney asking if he and the LASFS could handle the mechanical end of a FAPAzine. Eight days later I got a reply -- from two to seven days before airmail. Fran said okay -- but don't forget the mazuma. Mazuma, unfortunately, can't yet be sent by ham radio.) So MAHOPE stands a better chance of making the mailing than if I'd written by airmail or just dropped the completed dummy in Fran's lap. If you don't know a ham in your own town who handles traffic, ask at your local broadcast station -- a lot of broadcast operators are hams -- or look up the ARRL Section Commincations Manager for your area, whose name can be found in QBT magazine every month. It's ihis job to keep track of traffic operations in his area, and he can put you on the tract of traffic-minded hams in your neighborhood, and tell you what ham radio can and cannot do for you. MAHOPE is so titled to prevent duplication of the outrage perpetrated on the checklister in the first three issues of Vol. 1, No. 1 of Eccentric's Orbit. There's no Hawaiian or Guamanian fantasy in this issue because I haven't had the materials or inclination to research it. I spent some time in March and April writing and making spirit-dupe masters of a yhos-sized magazine entitled PILIKIA, which may or may not be in this mailing. I had to leave for Guam before I could run it off, and the latest word is that it may be collated in time to reach Speer for the July bundle. (i learned that by ham radio yesterday.) ************************************** PUBLISHER'S NOTE: I'm sorry about the lasy dob I've done on this. But I simply have not had either time or energy to take any pains with it; Mike's lucky to have it in the mailing even in this putrid edition. In the future, I just won't do any publishing for anyone else (as if anyone else would ever ask me, after scanning the errors in MAHOPE!) ftl -- 9 --
