mailed me a copy of the names of the candidates, plus their platforms. I made up ballot papers, copies of the candidates platforms, and mailed them to all Aussie members. I am glad to say that they all took the matter so seriously, that there was a hundred per cent poll - every fen voting for his choice. The ballot papers were then returned to the USA, and will be there in time to be included with the American votes. I believe this is the first time that foreign members have voted, and is purely as a result of the initiative, and interest of secretary Roy Lavender. I have distributed stationery and envelopes to all Australian members, plus copies of "FUTURIST", The Fanzine Checklist, and Fan Club List. I have on hand enough stationery and envelopes to supply an additional four new members. I have not had any supplies of the Prozine Checklist for distribution, but I presume those have been sent direct from USA to the various Aussie members. So far, nobody has squawked to me about not receiving any of the benifits.. In conclusion, I wish to pay a tribute to Roy and Deedee Lavender. Roy's great interest in the overseas members, and his invaluable co-operation have made the task of being Australian representative a pleasant one. I can only hope that whoever takes over from Roy will be as friendly and co-operative to the foreign members, and will keep up the practice of sending the Inner-Circle letters to the foreign representatives - a practice initiated by Roy. ----- NFFF ----- CLIPPINGS SERVICE FOR STF FANS - by Derek Pickles - This service really started about twelve months ago when Captain Kenneth Slater, Britain's leading fan, and editor of 'OPERATION FANTAST' suggested to me that I should start such a business for U.S. fans. I'd been sending clippings, from newspapers and magazines, to him, and sometimes must have overwhelmed him by the large packets he received from me. After thinking the idea over, I decided to do it, for I know if one is interested in certain fields of science or phenomena, the second-hand reprints in your own papers are often garbled and out of date. I knew the job was going to be a big one, for in Britain, wherever you live, you're not more than 500 miles from the head office, of all the national papers, London. So I should have to cover about a dozen major papers, and also the newspapers of the county I live in, a main morning and two evening papers, a total of 15 a day. Then on Sundays, I had to cover about 10 major papers. Then when something I cover is printed, I have to obtain the number of copies of that issue of the paper, to cover my customers, clip and file, and then at the month end, arrange in date order, invoice and despatch. My local newspaper has given me invaluable assistance, by throwing open their files to me, and helping in innumerable ways. So far several hundred leaflets have been despatched to fen in Britain and the U.S. (perhaps you've had one), and adverts and writeups have appeared in STARTLING STORIES, OPERATION FANTAST, SCIENCE FANTASY NEWS, THE NATIONAL FANTASY FAN, and others. Without Ken Slater's advice, help and very practical help too, and I must most gratefully acknowledge it. This will, I hope, give a glimpse of the inner workings of the S-F C.S. and one very important thing, before despatching clippings I read ALL the newspapers through. FLASH! Dear Ray:- I believe I'll be able to finish up FUTURIST #2 during Christmas vacation. Can you handle the mimeoing during January 1951? Rodd Boggs - and so, it appears you folks will be receiving FUTURIST #2 the latter part of January. Don't miss it - better subscribe NOW! Ray Higgs 11
