5 him leave the room, just as the Chief Scientist pressed the button to set off the first atomic chain reaction his world had ever known. As he slunk down the hall toward his office thoughts tortured him. Thoughts he could not understand or encompass. But there was one phrase in the in the letter he still held clutched in his hand. The scientist said "create.." And the letter said: "Create... and destroy" JUDY stared at the black sky the way her mother was staring. The thunder from it hurt her ears. She wanted to scream but her tongue clung to the top of her mouth. Her eyes were brittle with fear. She cried out then, "Mama, the sky [underlined] is falling!" Mrs. Green held her in her arms and laughed a tight uncertain laugh. "Of course not, darling. The sun will be out in a minute, watch and see. Then I'll tell you more about Chicken Little. She was mistaken. It was only an acorn that--" The screaming from the sky drowned out her words. She felt the world shiver under her feet. She held Judy close to her, to save her, But it was not use. Quite suddenly there was THE END. WALDO & MAGIC INC. by Robt. Heinlein Score another bullseye for Doubleday Science Fiction, or perhaps two bullseyes as the book is composed of two short novels. The first "Waldo" deals with the effects of physical weakness on a man's reaction to his environment. Blended into it are humor, fantasy and science which spice a wonderfully wacky story. Magic, used in everyday business is the basic idea behind "Magic, Inc." The old protection racket rears its ugly head. Naturally Archie Fraser isn't going to be fleeced--so he calls for some help. What he gets and what it does to him make up a tale marvelous in its thaumaturgy. Do your bookshelf (not to mention yourself) a favor by getting "Waldo and Magic, Inc." Reviewed by Sandy Charnoff.
