FANTASY "ATLANTIS" synopsis of ATLANTIS . . . . . . . re-titled, SIREN OF ATLANTIS . . . . . . . Antinea......MARIA MONTEZ Lt. St.Avit.......JEAN PIERRE AUMONT Morhange......DENNIS O'KEEFE Based on the novel "Atlantida" by Pierre Benoit Released Thru United Artists Exhausted and nearly dead of thirst, two French officers, Lt. Andre and St. Avit and Capt. Jean Morhange, dig futilely for water at a dry water hold at the Wadi Tarhit oasis at the foot of the towering black Hoggar Mountains of Central Africa. They have been searching for a lost archeological expedition headed by Francois Masson who was on the trail of the lost continent of Atlantis, which he believed still existed in the Hoggar Mountains, on the assumption that instead of being submerged, Atlantis became surrounded by land emerging all around it. A violent desert rainstorm threatens to engulf the two officers when a band of Tauregs, led by Eggali, the chief, rescue them and take them through secret passages into the ancient Taureg village in the Hoggars. (The film differs here, somewhat, in the fact that they requested to be led through the mountains to Atlantis, instead of being carried directly off.) St. Avit and Morhange become separated. In looking for the latter, St. Avit stumbles down a passageway leading to Antinea's palace. (As mentioned previously, in the book they are carried straight to the palace of the Queen, Antinea.) He finds himself in a library where Le Mesge, an elderly Frenchman, abducted by Antinea, and then becoming her counselor and librarian, is working. St. Avit follows Le Mesge who is summoned to the court burial room by Cortot, the court embalmer. With unbelieving eyes, he sees what is being shown to Le Mesge: a bronze-washed corpse of Masson. Morhange tracks St. Avit to the burial ground. They wander through the palace until they come to the Throne Room and for the first time see the queen of Atlantis, Antinea. St. Avit is enthralled by her beauty but to Morhange she is an evil murderess. Antinea receives St. Avit in her private quarters and accepts his obvious adoration. Tanit Zerga, her hand-maiden, meets Morhange. She tells him she is a prisoner and wants to escape. They make plans but are captured when they try putting them into effect.
