8 PARADOX His Heaven where all heroes are and in his Son our Holy Adolf Hitler, the Only Man. Who was, not begotten, not born of a woman, but Exploded! .....Heil Hitler. Who in our need in Germany's need, in the world's need; for our sake, for Germany's sake, for the world's sake; came down from the Mountain, the Holy Mountain, the German Mountain, the nameless one to march before us as Man who is God, to lead us, to deliver us, in darkness then, in sin and chaos and impurity, ringed round by devils, by Lenin, by Stalin, by Roehm, by Karl Barth. .....And I believe that when all things are accomplished and the last heathen man is enlisted in His Holy Army, that Adolf Hitler our God will come again in martial glory to the sound of guns and aeroplanes, to the sound of the trumpets and drums.....And I believe in pride, in courage, in violence, in brutality, in bloodshed, in ruthlessness, and all other soldierly and heroic virtues. Heil Hitler." To create this religion the Germans have systematically and thoroughly destroyed every remnant of printed matter dealing with the pact. Only one man--we'll come to him in a moment--knows the truth about the past. The Germans of this future are generally homosexual. In order to perpetuate the race, they suffer women to exist. This is one great difference between the Hitlerites and the Christians. The Christians treat their children as they would treat their dogs. The Hitlerites consider their women as far below dogs and the men are above dogs. Important features of the Hitlerian religion are Der Fuhrer, who is the Pope of the caste, and numerous Knights, descendants of Adolf's original closest followers. Here comes the really startling part of the book: the most accurate "prophecy", as far as I know, in a recent stf. novel. It seems that the original Hess had always been considered a bit queer. While Hitler himself was still alive, he began to realize what the Party was doing. He could not resign or revolt without losing his life, so--he fled to England! It's all down there, in black and white, and the book was written at least five years ago. To make the prophecy almost ridiculously exact, recent newspapers have said that Hess (the real one) is spending most of his time writing. In the book, Hess spends the rest of his life writing--writing a book which contains every scrap of knowledge of which he is certain. Very soon it becomes the only source of truth about the past, as the Germans ruthlessly destroy every scrap of printed matter in the world. Hess wrote it on parchment, for durability. He handed it down to his son; the son handed it down to his son--and down through the generations is passes. The sons are all Knights, of course, and a Knight is the only person with sufficient privacy to hide such a volume. In the time of the novel, the umpteenth-times-removed great-grandson of old Hess is growing old, and has no son to pass on the volume. Into the story comes Alfred, a Britisher who through hard work and good deeds has been granted the great privilege of visiting Germany. He even hopes to get a peep at the Sacred Airplane, Holy of Holies of
