As Thurber wrote it, Mitty is a rather pathetic little fellow who escapes from the monotony of everyday life -- and a domineering wife -- through a series of daydreams in which he is the hero who saves a beleaguered ship, or faces a firing squad with a smile on his lips, and so forth. The movie version, which has just been released, bears some resemblance to the story. It contains several of the original dreams and adds several Hollywood-inspired dreams, which are okay, too. But when the movie leaves the Thurber story completely, and delves into Mitty's real life, the whole affair becomes confused. According to Mr. Goldwyn, the real life Walter Mitty spends his time fighting a gang of foreign agents. He winds up capturing them and marrying a beautiful woman. All of which makes one wonder why he bothers to daydream at all. As in the case of many pictures of late, "Mitty" is overlong; judicious cutting would have improved it considerably. In case you don't read the movie ads: Danny Kaye is Walter Mitty; Virginia Mayo isThe Beautiful Girl; Boris Karloff is The Nasty Villain. The Goldwyn Girls are there to draw the crowds. It's a picture well worth seeing. -- LLOYD ALPAUGH, JR. FANTASY FLICKERS. Abbott and Costello's next movie is titled "Brain of Frankenstein". A scientist discovers that the Monster's brain is missing and finds it in Costello's head. He desires to put it back in the Monster's head, but Costello very naturally objects. (Alpaugh). ....Darryl Zanuck will film "The Fear of Little People", a novel by Guy and Constance Jones to be published by Random House. It is a semi-fantasy with a leprechaun importantly featured. (Coriell) ....Six atomic featurette films are now circulating: "One World or None", "Tale of Two Cities", "The Atom Strikes", "Atomic Power", "Operation Crossroads" and, the product of the Encyclopedia Britannica, "Atomic Energy". (Ackerman) .... Johnny Weismuller and company are on location in Mexico shooting "Tarzan and the Mermaids". (Coriell) .... Producers of "The Potted Psalm", already released surrealist short starring former Frisco fan Harry Honig, have just completed "The Cage", a half hour short in a "documentary-phantasy vein". (Ackerman). - 6 -
