Dec 31, 1945 Dear Folks, Here it is New Years Eve again. Certainly different from the last one. Don't think I ever told you what I did last New Years Eve so here goes. At 10:00 at night I started marching up to the front lines for the first time. We we[re] going to relieve another Div. We were marching along about a mile behind our lines and we could see and hear the artillery firing along with mortars. Every once in awhile a [tream?] of tracer bullets would slant off through the sky. We went to within 300 yds of our front lines and stopped in an old farm house. It was terribly cold and it was impossible to build a fire.
