July 23, 1944 Dear Evelyn, Damn, I'm back! Maybe that is not exactly the way to start a letter, but its the way I feel. Believe me, I hated to leave home almost more than I did the first time. It was so swell to see all you kids and the folks again. I looked forward to the army the first time, but I know what a hole I had to come back to this time. I had a much better trip on the way back. I had a seat all of the way. I was rather disappointed because my plans to see Rose didn't work out. She was to meet me at the station, but some sort of special class came up and she couldn't make it. No doubt you know what that is like. I ran onto some of the fellows I know in Chicago so at least I had company on the way back. I hope you weren't too terribly tired when you went on duty that afternoon. I thought about you and kept wondering how you were making out. You see, I did think about you.
