Sunday evening Oct 1, 1944 Dearest Evelyn, First of all I want to excuse myself for this paper and the wavy lines. I'm trying to write by the light of a camp fire and believe me, it isn't the best light in the world. Enough for that. We have been in the field for a week now, but either I'm getting used to it or it hasn't been so hard for it doesn't seem too bad. It gets tiresome and its hard to keep cleaned up so you feel decent, but outside of that its almost like living in camp. We train the same way, but we just start a little earlier and quit a little later here. No kidding, I'd love to have you here for company tonight. There is a fine fire going and a great big beautiful moon. It must be full from the looks of things. Having it shine down through these pine trees just adds to it I guess.
