Oct 8, 1944 Dearest Evelyn, As you can tell by the paper, I'm still in the field. It is for sure that we will be here for at least two more weeks. Makes quite a stay doesn't it? The first twoweeks, which includes today weren't bad. We had tents, could build fires and make all kind of noise but not anymore. Tomorrow we start with a two week problem which does away with all of the things I just mentioned. It will be just like we were in a combat zone. We will be sleeping (if any) in a fox hole etc. We are supposed to end up at a place eighty-five miles from here. That looks like walking to me. If you don't hear from me, which you probably won't, in the next two weeks don't worry because you will know what I'm doing. Sorry, but I'm afraid I can't help it. I don't particularly want to talk about army or what I've been doing so lets skip it. So you are finally getting those tonsils out. I hope they don't hurt too much. I remember when I took ether to get mine out. I felt
