15 1 TITLE III - DESEGREGATION OF PUBLIC 2 FACILITIES 3 SEC. 301. (a) Whenever the Attorney General receives 4 a complaint in writing signed by an individual to the effect 5 that he is being deprived of or threatened with the loss of his 6 right to the equal protection of the laws, on account of his 7 race, color, religion, or national origin, by being denied equal 8 utilization of any public facility which is owned, operated, or 9 managed by or on behalf of any State or subdivision thereof, 10 other than a public school or public college as defined in 11 section 401 of title IV hereof, and the Attorney General 12 believes the complaint is meritorious and certifies that the 13 signer or signers of such complaint are unable, in his judg- 14 ment, to initiate and maintain appropriate legal proceedings 15 for relief and that the institution of an action will materially 16 further the orderly progress of desegregation in public facili- 17 ties, the Attorney General is authorized to institute for or in 18 the name of the United States a civil action in any appropri- 19 ate district court of the United States against such parties 20 and for such relief as may be appropriate, and such court 21 shall have and shall exercise jurisdiction of proceedings in- 22 stituted pursuant to this section.
