OFFICE: UCCM, 707 Melrose Ave. Iowa City, Iowa 52240 (tel: 319-338-5461) Sally Smith, Roger Simpson "HAPPENINGS IN CAMPUS MINISTRY" 1971 -72 Summary: programs, involvements, UCCM, IOWA CITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA FOR FRIENDS OF CAMPUS MINISTRY, news-sheet, "ISSUES-IDEAS-INVOLVENEBTS" is distrubuted periodically, This summary supplements that, plus tha flyers and announcers sent out on occasion. Your inquiries are most welcome. PROGRAMS & INVOLVEMENTS: 1. Changing Family Structure Workshop: 430 registrants from 10 states. Margaret Mead lecture: SRO, with some 2500 persons. Donna Sooby, Chairwoman. An exciting and significant conference with follow-ups being planned. Publications, papers, tapes avaiable and in process. 2. Melrose Day Care Center: on-going ministry to married student families and 40 children. Self-sustaining financially. Completing 6 years. Helped start numerous other day cares. Leadership continues with community day care concerns. 3. Indochina Mobile Ed. Project: a peace effort toward reconciliation, person-to-person with people of Southeast Asia. Don Luce and Jacqui Chagnon. exhibit at THE MALL. Numerous talks: high schools, Kirkwood Comm. College, Coe, TV, & radio exposure, films Pentacrest rally, School of Religion, Vietnamse Dinner. 4.Workshop for Free Med. Clinic: 50 persons from Eastern Iowa, I11., Wisc., together to study alternate social structures and how a Free Med Clinic works. Set up clearing house, and regional contact-information exchange. 5. Workshop on TA (Transactional Analysis): some 40 clergy and counselors shared this experience at Faith United Church. 6. Symposium: Herrnstein I.Q. & Heredity. With Student Development Center, helped arrange faculty panel to critique "Atlantic Monthly" article, following Hernstein visit when he refused to speak. Crowded lecture hall with lively discussion lasting over 3 hours. 7. World Hunger-World Order Conference: supported College of Law, International Law Assn., bringing Dr. Borlaug and other experts on these issues together for two days to think through issues and offer some solutions. 8. Film Series: special summer programs, now a yearly event, designed to reach educators and deal with changing styles of life seen in public schools. 9. Exposure Experiences: these continue periodically for selected groups. The Commision members were invited in December . An on-going effort to provide direct experiences with persons in alternate life-styles. 10.Student Loan Fund; from parking cars, funds are obtained for use in emergency loans & grants to students with critical financial needs. 11. Chicago seminars, drama groups, drug rehab. phms: participate in contacts with such groups to expand concepts of problems and solutions. 12. SALLY SMITH INSTALLATION: some 80 persons from the Commission, the Board, and the local community shared with us in this significant event for our total Campus Ministry. Wide publicity was given as people became aware of her call as the ONLY FULL TIME WOMAN CAMPUS MINISTER IN IOWA. 13. Board meetings with Dr. Phil Huhbard, Vice-Provost, discussing our common concerns for racial problems and minorities. Additional program with Don Conroy, staff, STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTER, focusing on the changing patterns of University philosophy and practice in relation to student life. 14. TV Panels: WMT, Cedar Rapids, Sally talking about Campus Ministry with Jim Rogers. Roger talking about students and the Church. 15. Penal Reform: with state staff, arranging conversations with persons concerned and involved in direct efforts to help persons in prision. Objective: that the Church be the inter-face to make available resources of the University to persons in prisions. Initial meeting being held to explore problems, possibilities, and identify resources. (CONT. OVERLEAF)
