Nationally: under UNITED MINISTRIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION (10 communions). State level: U. Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Disciples, Am. Baptist, Church of Brethren. Known as UCCMC (UNITED CAMPUS CHRISTIAN MINISTRY COMISSION). IOWA CITY USSM BOARD: composed of 21 - staff, students, citizens from Iowa City area. STAFF: Nationally, about 300 Campus Ministers. In Iowa, 9 for 1971, BUT BEING REDUCED TO 7 for 1972. At University of Iowa in '71: Roger Simpson, Phil Shively, Sally Smith; only Simpson will be retained for '72. B. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CAMPUS MINISTRY? In Bonhoeffer's style: "..to speak of God, not on the edges, but at the center of life." The Church, through the Campus Ministry, seeks "to speak of God" at the center of life in the University, which, in turn, is a prime center of life in our society. C. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (a descriptive sketch): - Identify and emphasize issues and areas of concern of Church-University-Society, which need attention and action, as we are motivated by love, justice, mercy and truth. - Accept responsability for prophetic criticism, based on reflection, dialogue, mutuality, and commitment to creative action for survival. - Share in struggles for development of more humane and social styles for life, seeking to match the prophetic word with prophetic acts. - Develop ecumenical and mutual support styles of ministry with church institutions. - Practice democratic sharing of authority and responsability for maximum involvement of churchmen in the total ministry. - Interpretation of Church-to-University and University-to-Church.
