INVOLVEMENTS, CONT'd ....over-the-shoulder look at recent "happening"...... COMING UP: Tuesday, July 20th, 7:30 PM, Barbara Madden (Des Moines), Chairman of Association for Medical Control of Abortion, will meet with interested persons at the Concregational Church, corner Clinton & Jefferson. Jane & Roger Simpson helping arrange this. ECUMENICAL DISCUSSIONS: on-going with Wesley Fnd., Baptist CM Fdn. After meeting June 16th, decided to overture Assn. of Campus Min. to "enlarge" to accommodate Board representatives (to avoid duplications, and to make ecumenical programming and organization correspond). ACM is discussinf the matter. It has built-in problems for Lutherans and Roman Catholics, & possibly Christian Reformed. IUCCM COMMISSION'S STRATEGY & MINISTRY COMM. has met with the Exec. Comm. of our local Board, plus Roger, and two campus ministers of interested Boards (Jim Davison, Baptist; Dave Schuldt, Wesley) to discuss matters pertaining to "more staff" for U. of Iowa. They encourage further discussions, and want to get in-put from other Campus Ministers and local Clergy. SALLY'S LETTER TO THE COMMISSION** has gone out, and most who read this will have seen the letter. She is requesting that she be considered for the staff opening at Iowa City from Jan. '72. She is requesting responses from those who would support her proposal. Please give this your early and earnest consideration. If you do not have a copy, contact the office. MARRIED STUDENT LOAN FUND keeps active. Loaned out $725 this year. MARK LARSON defense: charged in one of the "police sweeps" in May, he was "convicted" by J. P. Dautremont, and has "appealed" to District Court. Thanks for the many, many efforts to support Mark and his family in this crisis. COUNSELING about the "Draft" & "Problem Pregnancies" continues intensive. June 4, July 24, Aug. 30: Task Force on Higher Ed, (Synod), meeting to decide in recomendations about Hi. Ed. (Campus Min. & Colleges) for Synod. Roger attending. June 14-16, Chicago medical conference on Genetic Counseling. Roger and Jane attended. June 28-30: Synod of Iowa meeting, Ames. Hearing on Campus Ministry was Mon., PM, with Roger attending. Room was full: standing-room-only, with many college-age students. TWO MODERATORS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY WERE PRESENT: Mrs, Lois Stair, 1971; Dr. Wilbur Laws, 1970. They were very interested and participated in the questions and discussion. Tue., SYNOD VOTED, with no dissent, THE REQUEST BUDGET FOR CAMPUS MINISTRY, at same level as for 1971. PERSONALS (sorry, no real gossip) ..... Roger (with wife, Jane) took one week camping trip to Colorado. He will be in Office and "around" for remainder of summer. Phil is "sweating out" his major paper and running the Whetstone Office. Sally is on a two week camping trip to Canoe-boundary country, Ely, Minn. Marjorie is in Office in mornings, until Aug. 6th. Bill Connor keeps Coffee Club open, daily - & may answer phone occasionally. We are "hunting" a new Treasurer: any ideas???? (P.S. for your information, the editor of this newsletter is Roger Simpson.) ** The above note about Sally's letter is written in her absence and without prior approval by her or by others. I trust it is in order. This matter of "staff" is of critical importance for all of us and we need to give attention to every detail, continuously, in a judicious manner.
