April 15,1971 From: Roger Simpson, Campus Minister at the University of Iowa, Iowa City Regarding: 1) "general job description" (Ref: Ex. Comm. Min., p. 2, 4-7-71) "your role (job description) in 1972 Staff -- including local ministry and any other areas you consider to be crucial" 2) "The characteristics of the staff ministry you envision as supplementing yours for IU, ISu and UNI" (Ref: Tollefson letter to UCCM Staff, April 9) 1. General Job Description, projecting into 1972: A. Under direction of the Commission, to serve with the Local Board (or Council) at the University of Iowa, sharing in a team relationship with other UCCMC Campus Ministers. Other ecumenical relationships should be nurtured, while maintaining a working membership within the United Presbyterian structures. B. The mandate of the ministry is to live out the Gospel of God's love for the whole world, from the context of the Campus, and the perspectives of higher education. C. Theologically, the emphasis should be on the prophetic and structural aspects of the ministry: in the context of "prophecy", issue and task oriented; in the context of "structure", area oriented. D. Methodology: the ecumenical approach will be required to enlarge and enrich the campus ministry. This will be achieved as efforts are made to increase the dynamic involvement of all concerned persons in the planning and conduct of the ministry; likewise, there is need to continue and intensify cooperation with other campus ministry efforts at the University of Iowa. E. A model suggested for the action-decidion process: the convergence of three factrs provides mission opportunity: (1) a relevant issue; (2) available resources and concerned persons, groups; (3) a structural opportunity. In this model there is a dynamic, creative involvement of three essential, vital entities: prophecy ("The Word"), persons ("became flesh"), structure ("and dwelt among us."). F. Issues, Tasks, Concerns, Problams for Priority ministry: (1) Health Care. Thisn is an area of continuing and increasing national and international crisis. The major medical center is the midwest is the medical complex at the University of Iowa. With my office facilities in close proximity to the medical complex, with a orientation, training and interest in this area. With a wide acquaintance among the health care devivery persons, and having a large number of such concerned persons on the Board, it is a fortunate convergence of the issue, the resources, and the structural opportunity for attempts at creative ministry. Among the past and present involvements are: - Participation in the "Health and Human Values" programs (a priority item in the UMHE budget). - Participation in national conference on health issues and Campus Ministry, Birmingham. - Participation in several inter-disciplinary discussion groups in the Medical complex. - Experimental Project, for National Council of Churches on the "Church and Medical Service Overseas".
