(1) - Assistance in organizing and providing orientation for the "Crisis Center", an SOS type telephone service for emergency assistance, support, and referral. - On the Steering Committee of the "Free Medical Clinic" just now beginning operation with a coalition of radical med students, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and numerous faculty personnel. - Organizer of "Johnson Country Citizen's Committee on Alcoholism". Continuing advisor and member of Board. Working to develop a half-way house. - Organized and provide supportive services for "AA Coffee Club", in basement of 707 Melrose. Open daily, with host, for free services to all. - Member of "Clergy Consulatation, Problem Pregnancies" and active counselor. - Involved in political efforts to liberalize abortion laws. - Assistance with numerous drugs programs, seminars, panels. - Presentations to medical students on ethical issues of drugs, abortion, life problems. - Numerous conferences with individuals in the medical complex: professors, medical staff, administrators, students, patients. - Chairman, ad hoc Committee to consult with Hospital Administrators regarding emergency care for alcoholic. - Chairman or convenor of ad hoc committee to study and consider health care delivery systems changes and University resources. Currently studying Carnegie Report. - Member, Johnson Country Health Council. - Chairman, "Congress on Health", Johnson County Health Council effort to provide community wide forum for discussion of obstacles to defining and delivery of health care. - Member, Hoover Health Council, regional program of 8 counties for new forms of health care delivery. - Projecting a response to request by "Society for Health and Human Values" for a viable definition of "health". - Seeking Foundation grants for a task force to do the necessary research and study that would result in a regional or national conference on "Definitions of Health for the 70's" - Maintenance of a contact file on a community of persons in health care. - Provision of articles, and occasionally, a book of interest to health care personnel dealing with religious concerns. - Projected, is a series of conferences for clergy who are concerned with the ethical issues of abortion from a medical viewpoint. - Projected, also, is a series of seminars on what's happening in the areas of genetics, organ transplants, death-elimination efforts, and the relevant ethic and value issues. - Projected is some effort to report-out some of these issues and creative developments in an ethical, religious context for a broader discussion of the concerns by the church at large. This might be done by articles, a syndicated column, and special television documentaries. - With more program support, the Melrose Center could become a dialogue center for persons interested in health care and the Church. Each involvement with any one of the above offers more opportunities for response than can possibly be met.
