There is no way to influence the future without being where it is being shaped. ...the ministry in higher education is frequently involved at those places in our society where change is taking place. In a rapidly changing society and world, the ministry in higher education provides an excelletn resourcefor the church in understanding the future." E.I. "The most crucial problem on this campus is race." Bill Downey, Daily Iowan, Feb. 9, 1971, p. 4 (in his letter to new head football coach, Mr. Lauterbur). 2. Expansion of the war into Laos. 3. Draft call for March: 17,000. THIRD MONTH AT THIS LEVEL. DRAFT CALLS UP OVER LAST YEAR. 4. Health care: wome's rights to pregnancy termination continue endangered by Iowa's law - while being declared unconstitutional in other states. INVOLVEMENT: some past, current, and planned "happenings"... 1. Ecumenical discussions with Wesley Fdn., Baptists to be renewed by Board action. On the Committee: Dorothy Whipple, Martin Rosinski, Phil Shively. 2. TEEP: application for seminar on THE CHANGING FAMILY STRUCTURE. Proposal sent to National Campus Ministers Assn.; proposed for Fall, '71. 3. SCRANTON COMM: contacting U., Speech and Drama Dept. to arrange major panel presentation of findings of special sub-comm. which studied the report locally. Invitation gone to Wm. Scranton, Chmn. Commission on Campus Unrest. 4. Health Care Task Force: meeting to consider U. role in new approaches to health care. Currently studying Carnegie Report. Johnson Co. Health Counsil is scheduling "Congress on Public Health" for April. Inventory of health issues in Iowa City Area. Simpson, Chmn. 5. UMHE regional conference, Wed., Feb. 10, at IM Union, called to assist other Church leaders & Campus Ministers in doing the kind of relating to sub-cultures attempted here in a UCCM sponsored conference. Sally Smith gives leadership to this. 6. "The World of the New Generation" is another "exposure experience" to a variety of the sub-cultures present at the U. Dates: Feb. 19-20. For local Board Members: 2 from each campus ministry group cooperating. S. Smith organizing. 7. Transactional Analysis Workshop for Pastors: scheduled for March 8-9 at Faith United Church. Simpson helping arrange. 8. Interpretation task Forces continue: recent visists have been to Kalona Community Church - Smith arranging. Muscatine, First Pres., Vinton Presby., Zion Lutheran, Iowa City, Fred Thomas and Roger Simpson helping out. 9. Iowa Council to Repeal Draft: planning lobby strategy, related activities locally. Simpson liason for ACM. 10. Special Lectures Comm: joint meeting with Buckminster Fuller Society Thursday, Feb. 25. Exploring values issues and process of communication. * OVER *
