PEACE EFFORTS: Continuous efforts are involved in direct action for peace. This has included, in the past year, such efforts as: direction and participation in moratorium efforts, lobbying trip to Washington for a week, letters to Congressmen, discussion groups, organizing leafleting, peace demonstration in Des Moines, and support for peace-related groups and efforts. (Prophetic and structural ministry. Smith, Shively, and Simpson involved, together with Board members and numerous Clergy.) SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS: Continuously, Campus Ministers are called on for a variety of speaking engagements from Sunday morning worship to youth group high school classes to private and civic organizations. (Prophetic, structural and priestly ministry. Smith, Shively and Simpson involved.) COMMUNITY-UNIVERSITY CONFLICT RESOLUTION: A major on-going issue is the traditional "town-gown" tension. We have been involved in a major way in the past year, at a number of points, in a way that have brought both praise and criticism. Growing out of the May '70 events and the Dey Office use with Monitors, UCCM has been the focus of attention as power entities seek to relate and control. Most specifically, the Campus Ministers' letter to the City Council, replying to an inflammatory speech bu the Police Chief, and subsequent conferences with the City Manager and the Police Officials and news media led to the Campus Ministry being in a controversial position. It is noted with satisfaction that no more such reckless speaking by the Police Chief has occurred, and in general, restraint has typified police action recently in Iowa City. (Prophetic and structural ministry. Simpson involved.) UNIVERSITY-COMMUNITY DIALOGUES: Two dialogues were conducted by UCCM sponsorship in the Civic Center during the winter. Each was attended by 12-14 persons representing a wide cross section of the community. The meetings were topical and the discussion proceeded under guidance of a member of the Board. Within a month of the one on injuctions as a sanction directed against students, the city took action to drop the standing injunction previously imposed. The seconf was on the problems of student housing. Shively also took part in a similar dialogue sponsored by the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce and consulted in the planning of others sponsored by the Friends. (Prophetic and structural ministry. Shively, Simpson participated with members of the Board.) EXPOSURE EXPERIENCES: Opportunities for adults to meet variety of youth on their own grounds; discuss life styles, values, goals. Evaluation by participants and youth involved--extremely appreciative. A number of interesting spinoffs followed. Sex campus minitries involved. 1. Nov. 1970 - 2 1/2 day experience for 11 persons (Jr. College personnel, probation officer, clergy, and others) from 4 Iowa communities. 2. Feb. 1971 - 12 hour experience for local campus ministry board members (4 from UCCM). 3. April 1971 - 12 hour experience for people in Iowa City Community (School Bd. member, radio interview hostess, businessman, U. personnel, others). 4. Iowa City and UMHE co-hosted conference in Iowa City on exposure experiences. Participants were campus ministers and others from several states. (A prophetic exposure to the structured people. Smith and Dan Fullerton involved.) TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS WORKSHOP: One of the most recent innovations in the group dynamics and social psychology is the Eric berne school known as "transactional analysis." The Campus Ministry jontly sponsored a two day workshop at Faith United Church, presented by the Wisconsin Transactional Analysis Team. About 45 Pastors from across the state attended. (Structural and pastoral ministry. Walt Olsen and Shively and Simpson involved.) (continued)
