- 3 - THE HIRED ED. SEMINARS, still receive enthusiastic support on the part of university personnel. The head of the College of Nursing and her assistant and members of their staff, an associate Dean of Medicine, the director of the Student Development Center, the Dean of Extension Services and the Vice President for Research all volunteered time for a seminar entitled: "The University, Its Best Foot forward." The seminar for pastors and laymen was scrubbed when several registrants cancelled at the last moment. (Prophetic, structural and a lot of work for a no-go mission, Shively frustrated.) RACIAL CONCERNS: Continuing on-going involvement in the racial crisis, we have sought to promote discussion of issues here at the University and in the community, seek immediate practical solutions and have made numerous efforts to reduce conflict. Specifically, attempts have been made to get persons together to discuss issues related to: housing, employment, equal opportunities, personal-group hostilities and especially, dorm life. (Prophetic, structural and pastoral ministry. Shively and Simpson involved.) Co-sponsored, Rev. Gordon Graham, adviser to Martin Luther King and official of SCLC, lecture in Iowa Memorial Union. (Prophetic ministry, Simpson involved.) PAUL HOENK MINISTRY AND NATIONAL CAMPUS MINISTRY REVIEW TEAM: With efforts to terminate radical campus ministry (as a part of the reforming ministry of the Church) on the increase nationally, this phenomenon has come home to Iowa City. Spectacularly this occurred in terms of our colleague, Paul Hoenk. At his invitation, the Campus Ministers, individually, and corporately, sought to rally his support with counsel and aid as he sought reconciliation with his denominational executives and regional structures. All efforts failed and Paul Hoenk was forced to resign. It is with some satisfaction that record can be made of attempts to influence the church structures, both directly and through public media. It is noted appreciatively that the Assn. of Campus Ministers chose to become directly involved when the UCCM Commission terminated two of the UCCM Campus Ministers at the University of Iowa. (Prophetic, structural and pastoral ministry. Smith, Shively and Simpson involved - yeah, verily.) MARRIED STUDENT LOAN FUND: With funds derived from parking cars at football games, over the years, a revolving non-interest loan fund has been built up in the amount of $1,916.45. Within the past year, $1,055.00 in 6 loans have been made. (Structural and pastoral ministry. Simpson and various Board members. Parking participants included Shively, Smith, members of Simpson family, Board member Fred Thomas, Gordon Eggleton, et al.) ADDITIONAL GIFTS RECEIVED FOR DISCRETIONARY PURPOSES: Monthly and single amount gifts have augmented opportunities for loan assistance and personal grants. Shively, Simpson, Smith involved. HEALTH CARE DISCUSSIONS: A number of informal discussions have occurred seeking direction in how to best relate University resources to the solving of immediate health care problems. Some topics have been: "definition of health"; "curriculum"; "cooperation of University and community resources"; and most recently, efforts to read and discuss the Carnegie Report on Health Care Delivery. (Prophetic and structural ministry. Keith Long and Simpson involved.) FREE MEDICAL CLINIC: Recently, efforts have been made by faculty and students in the University to set up an experimental preventative health, free medical clinic. Organized and functioning, it is now open two days a week, serving some 30 to 35 persons per night. (Prophetic, structural and pastoral ministry. Simpson involved. (continued overleaf)
