AA COFFEE CLUB: This is an on-going effort to serve the AA community of the city and University. In the basement of 707 Melrose, an open-house is maintained daily, 11 AM-7 PM, staffed by a volunteer host, "Bill". An open AA meeting occurs weekly. Countless contacts with the community and with AAs occur through this facility. (Structural and pastoral ministry. Simpson involved.) JOHNSON COUNTY HEALTH COUNCIL: Through relation with this citizen's committee to advance the cause of health throughout the area, a HEALTH CONGRESS was organized for the organizers and deliverers of health care to dialogues with citizens of the community. Some 50 persons attended, and are forming task forces to continue concerns raised and to plan for a second HEALTH CONGRESS in September. (Pastoral and structural ministry. Simpson, chmn. of the Health Congress.) EQBAL AHMAD OF THE HARRISBURG CONSPIRACY GROUP, spoke convincingly at Macbride Hall of the injustice perpetrated against the Berrigan brothers, himself and others. Talk sponsored by the Assn. of Campus Ministers and others; also a wine and cheese party to raise defense money for the group. (A prophetic ministry with all staff involved." STAFF AND BOARD RELATE TO MANY COMMUNITY GROUPS: Ecological groups, political parties and organizations, educational committees, course work, law enforcement, welfare services, professional organizations, all help to pre-occupy the remaining time of the board and staff. Campus ministry is strengthened and enriched by this high level of community participation. A RE-ENACTMENT OF GOOD FRIDAY drew a crowd of five to six hundred to the Pentacrest as the age-old message of tragedy, shame and guilt, and the perversity of men was drawn into a contemporary theme with a liturgy calling on the suffering martyrs and saints of all ages to "stand with us." A strongly prophetic statement, planning by all staff in context of ACM with Shively participating. PERSONAL RESPONSES TO REFERRED STUDENTS: All those students who were referred to us by pastors and parents received an invitation to join members of the staff and student members of the Board for a meal. - Opportunities were given to discuss their personal concerns and various UCCM involvements. (A pastoral ministry-- Shively, Simpson, and Smith and student board members participating.) A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TIME OF TROUBLE: Campus ministers with others observed and at times participated in the Citizen's for Peace demonstrations at Des Moines (during Nixon's visit); the Anti-ROTC demonstration at the fieldhouse in March; the demonstrations at the Draft Board Offices and at the leaving of induction buses; demonstrations at the University placement offices; anti war teach-in at the Union; May Day Peace Festival; the Kent State Jackson State memorial parade and the disruptive events following. ASSISTANCE IN THE PROGRAMS OF THE LOCAL CHURCHES: Sally helped the Christian Action Committee of the First Christian Church to formulate a resolution urging young men to weigh their military obligations in light of Christian convictions, and to consider particularly the position of conscientious objector. (The resolution was adopted at the Iowa Society of Christian Churches' annual meeting.) Additional planning and assistance was given to the adult church school class of both St. Andrew and the first Christian Churches, to the St. Andrew Social Concerns Committee, and to the congregational Church Sr. High breakfast. (A response to the ecclesiastical structures, all staff participating.) HALF-WAY HOUSE: For work release prisoners from Anamosa in operation in Iowa City. Phil serves on the Board of Directors. (A pastoral ministry related to the community structures.) (continued)
