Sally Smith October 13, 1971 Melrose Day Care Center was established in 1966 by the United Campus Christian Ministry Board with two Major goals in mind: 1. To provide much needed good day care for children in this community, primarily for children of University students. 2. To encourage other day care developments. The Day Care is meant to be a non-profit operation and it was hoped that it would be a "break-even" operation. After initial heavy capital expenses and considerable operating losses, it has finally reached t he point where expenses no longer exceed the income. The Directors and staff of the Day Care have been given considerable freedom to develop their own educational aims and programs. The minimum which we have expected is that the children who spend so much time from their own homes will find at Melorse a loving homelike atmosphere with opportunity for healthy growth and development. We have always leaned toward a more free and creative approach rather than a highly regimented type of program. During the early stages of the Day Care there was a committee which gave very helpful recommendations for establishing standards and procedures. Small committees and individuals have served in this same resource capacity at all times. The UUCM Board feels the need now to establish another such committee which will give ongoing stability and encourage achievement of our goals at the highest level possible Such a committee would include the director and perhaps other staff from the Day Care, a representation from the UUCM Board, parent(s) of Day Care children, other persons in the community who are concerned for good day care. Persons on this committee should probably be asked to serve for a term of one year, with the possibility of some continuing longer. There might be at least 6 meetings a year, or more if necessary. Some of the services which this committee would perform would included: -Review of policies and procedures dealing with licending requirements and standards (health, facilities, staffing, etc.) with recommendations for maintaining these. -Consideration of the general aims, goals, philosophy for this Day Care with recommendations regarding them. -Dealing with any other policy matters which may arise. -Recommendations to both the Day Care staff and the UUCM Board as needed-- to keep the UUCM Board informed of developments at the Day Care and keep Day Care staff informed of developments at the UUCM which may affect the Day Care. -Help in developing public relations with the U. and the community at large.
