SUMMARY REPORT & RECOMMENDATION HEALTH CARE AND HUMAN VALUES WORKSHOP December 11, 1971 TO: Leaders of the Workshop, those who registered, those who attended, plus the Sponsoring groups. FROM: Roger Simpson, Convenor, Planning Committee, 707 Melrose Ave., Iowa City. I. HISTORY. Planning began when a grant of $200. from the Christian Education Committee of Southeast Presbytery was offered for a workshop on the area of health care and human values. Numerous persons shared in several exploratory discussions throughout the Summer. In September, plans were finalized, with the following guidelines: a one day conference, with a mix of people, from Eastern Iowa, discussing (in small groups), a current problem in health care, against a background of concern to identify relevant social and personal values. II. PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBERS: (including those in the exploratory discussions) Pearl Zemlicka (Prof., College of Nursing); Richard Caplan (M.D., Prof., College of Medicine); Hal Richerson (M.D., Prof., College of Medicine); Geraldine Bussee (Prof., College of Nursing); George Paterson (Ph.D., Chaplain, Prof., School of Religion); Keigh Long (Ph.D., Prof. Environ. Health); Brooks Booker (Director, Conference & Institutes); Mrs. J.A. Liercke (Visiting Nurses Assn.); Sue Krohmer (Coordinator, Free Medical Clinic); Robert Summers (M.D., Prof., College of Medicine); James Pullen (Medical Student); Roger Simpson (Campus Minister); Walter Chappell (Educ. Consultant, College of Medicine, Ph. D.); Lyn Cuda (Student in Nursing); Larry Sellers (Research Assistant, College of Medicine, President, Student American Medical Assn.); Janet Mapel (Visiting Nurses Assn.) Lab,: statement on the "Health Crisis in V.D." David Belgum, Ph.D., Professor, School of Religion, College of Medicine: statement on "Social, Personal, and Value Factors". Sr. Mary Blaise Fuzard, Grad. Student, Higher Ed.: group leader Sue Krohmer, Coordinator, Free Med. Clinic: group leader Geraldine Bussee, Professor, College of Nursing: group leader Marian Sheafor, Professor, College of Nursing: group leader Mike Ward, Grad. Student, Hospital Adm. : group leader Walt Chappell, Ph.D., Coordinator, Medical Instruction, College of Medicine: group leader Dr. Richard Winter, Dermatologist: group leader and resource. Perl Zemlicka, Prof., College of Nursing: Conference Chairwoman Roger Simpson, Campus Minister: arrangements The Leaders met for both an orientation meeting before, and a review meeting after the workshop. IV. ARRANGEMENTS: through Brooks Booker, Director, Office of Conference and Institute[[s?]] Iowa Memorial Union, University of Iowa. This included a multitude of details: printing, mailings, registrations, scheduling of rooms, refreshments, and various expense accounting details. V. INVITATIONS: a simplified brochure was printed and mailed to about 1000 persons, with another 500 copies distributed int he University and through Church channels. VI. REGISTRATIONS AND ATTENDANCE: 86 persons either registered or attended; however 51 persons attended. VII. PUBLICITY: Al Swanson, U. Printing Office, advisor. News releases went to all local news media. Articles appeared in the Press Citizen, and the Daily Iowan, with announcements over KXIC and WSUI. (Cont. on overleaf)
