-2- If these laws are repealed, will there be any laws regulating abortion? If the present laws are repealed, the decision to terminate a pregnancy will rest, simply, with the woman and her licensed practicing physician. A law would regulate illegal abortionists by imposing a heavy fine and jail sentence. What is IAMCA? Iowa Association for Medical Control of Abortion is a group formed in January of 1970 to coordinate state efforts towards the repeal of Iowa's abortion law. Its founders: Mrs. Harlan Giese, Mrs. Lauren Madden and Mrs. Stephen Schodde, were three Des Moines homemakers who had studied the issue and decided a unique organization was needed to effect a change in Iowa's present laws. From a small mailing list and a mailing address the group has grown into an organization with a mailing list of 2,000,active chapters in several counties and a nucleus of interested individuals in some 149 cities across the state. What have the primary coordinating efforts been? The primary coordinating efforts of IAMCA have been: 1. to educate citizens in regard to the issue and problem of abortion; 2. to mobilize public opinion in the form of letter writing and lobbying with state legislators as well as use of mass media; 3. to work within the political parties of Iowa and to encourage candidates to favor repeal; 4. to assist churches and medical associations in their efforts toward change. Have these efforts been successful? The climate of public opinion in all parts of Iowa is dramatically moving toward sentiment for liberalizing or repealing the law. A Des Moines Register and Tribune poll taken several months ago reported 74% favored easing the law. The efforts of IAMCA workers in Iowa have contributed toward this move. -3- What can individuals and organizations do?
