EXHIBIT A For your information = JOHNSON COUNTY HEALTH COUNCIL SUMMARY, ANNUAL MEETING "HEALTH CONGRESS" At the Annual Meeting of the Johnson County Health Council, April 22, 1971, four workshops were formed to evaluate generalized health care needs in Iowa City. Following are a few of the findings: 1. Lack of public education: ignorance of what constitutes good health care and lack of recognition of needs by professionals. 2. Need for information center to direct needy persins to proper agency or care facility. 3. Lack of communication between groups, and duplication of efforts. 4. Insufficient funds to meed needs. 5. Existing health care facilities do not meet needs of Johnson County such as: a. Many services are student oriented (U. of I. dental clinic sees patients only in a need basis for training of students). b. Educational program for trainable mentally retarded is served exclusively through Pine School which has an excellent program but again may reach maximum number of children which it can serve and its sole responsability is to the University and the training of students. c. Other examples could be given. 6. V.D. is a growing problem among the youth. 7. Lack of centralization of staff, now housed in different buildings. 8. Problems of the aged. a. Increased funding for care of bed patients (versus ambulatory patients) has encouraged bed care beyond need. b. Financially depressed, they are incapable of gaining adequate health care through our present systems. 9. Need for survey to identify needs: a more comprehesive survey of health needs and services is urgent. 10. Alcoholism: ranked the top 3rd or 4th medical problems, this needs to be given a top priority by government and health care entities. OBJECTIVES OF JOHNSON CO. HEALTH COUNCIL. The object of this organization shall be to promote health in our County through: a) Serve as a forum to provide discussion of the issues relating to health programs and activities. b) Provide a mechanism for the study of identified health problems. c) Interpret the health activities to the community. d) Encourage a partnership of private and public efforts in the promotion of health. e) Evaluate the existing programs and established priorities.
