"THE ECO-NOMICS OF ECOLOGY IN IOWA CITY" (A series of forums on local encironmental issues) Forum I Thursday Sept. 30 7:30 p.m. "Transportation" Phillips Hall Auditorium George Brown and Dennis Kraft In our society we rely heavily on the automobile for the convenience and freedom it provides but the costs of that reliance are increasingly high. The supporting system required by the automobile uses a large amount of space and resources, especially in urban centers. Questions to be addressed in Forum I would include: Is there an alternative to heavy use of the automobile which is economically, environmentally, and socially feasible? Can mass transportation balance and supplement and yet allow some freedom? What are the causes and possible modifications of our high mobility? Forum II Thursday October 7 7:30 "Land Use" Phillips Hall Auditorium James Harris and Ben Summerwill Who does and who should make plans about land use? How are the rights of individuals vs. community vs. special interests to be balanced? What criteria should be used in location of industry, urban renewal, use of public and private land? What are the relationships between private systems and public property? These and related questions will be the subject of Forum II.
