sds newsletter In the past few weeks, sds has formed two committees, one to abolish ROTC and one to Ally with Campus Workers. We've been leafleting, canvassing, picketing and talking to people all over campus. During the next few weeks we hope to intensify these actions and work in addition to support the IBP strikers and to raise money. THE IOWA BEEF PACK INC. STRIKE sds is supporting the strike of workers against the Iowa Beef Pack Inc. plant in Dakota City, Nebr. IBP bosses have discriminated against Indians (A Company VP referred to a Company policy of "bringing up thirty head of Indians from the reservation"), paid women less than men for the same work, and have tried to force workers to accept a full dollar/hour less than workers in other packing plants. Now that the union has struck for conditions equal to other plants, IBP bosses are trying to smash the union itself, and bring about a general lowering of wages throughout the industry. They are actively recruiting Mexican workers (and "providing" them [ilegible] with board in a Company shanty town, and Company sold food and work clothing), have heavily fortified the plant with trenches and armed strikebreakers. Reactionary Nebraska laws have limited the union to only six pickets at the plant, and scabs have exercised their "right" (under Nebraska law) to shoot at pickets. If the union loses this fight, packinghouse workers will face lower wages and worsening work conditions. PICKETING IN IOWA CITY IBP is trying to continue making a profit with scab-produced meat. sds has discovered that the Iowa Cit A&P Store (on S. Clinton) is selling this scab meat. In support of the workers we will begin picketing this store when it opens at 9:00 AM on Saturday (March 7) and continue picketing until the store stops selling IBP Scab meat. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! If you can help anytime during the day or evening, please CALL 351-6266 or contact Don Hecker.
