ARE FANS PEOPLE? by Russell Morris Wood I'm outnumbered. I'm suppressed. I'm deluged under the will of the majority. I'm MAD. At the June 1st meeting of the HARBOR FANTASY LEAGUE, I proudly displayed a few test sheets I had run off of the club fanzine, and I was all but [[?]] off my pins[[?]] by the reaction of the members to the department I had titled "Quote and Unquote." To meet[[?]] of you, this deleted defunct department will forever remain a deep dark mystery, but to those who will receive these [[those??]] few copies that were first run off, let me say that I, personally, offer no apology. I still think I am right. The consensus of opinion in the HFL seemed to be "What? A [[?]] in a fanmag? Out of the question! Fans have no sense of humor! All they are interested in is reviewing the promags, then reviewing the reviews, the of the reviews, and then reviewing the reviews of the reviews of the reviews, etc., ad nauseum." Okay, so the jokes were corny. So are most jokes that people enjoy. Even fans are people. Or aren't they? Elbert[[?]] Hubbard was fond of saying that there are only fifteen original jokes in human [[history??]], and of those only five can be repeated [[?]] mixed company. "Quote and Unquote" certainly had nothing in it that the most lily-minded fan or fanette could object to. After reading the June mailing of FAPA, I am even more forcibly[[?]] convinced that fans need more, not less humor. Too much seriousness is not only deadly boring, but DEADLY, period. Many things are found in [[?]], but a sense of humor is not one of them. (P. S. I talked them out of cutting Al's cartoon!)
