A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PHILADELPHIA SCIENCE FICTION SOCIETY By Robert A. Madle It can truthfully be said that, although the number of Philadelphia science fiction fans suffer in comparison with the huge groupe residing in New York and several other of the large cities in the United States, the Phally group is a very enthusiastic one. Philadelphia fandom has always been minute, and there is no indication at present that this unfortunate circumstance will be remedied. However, despite this, the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society has become on of the prime factors in the fan world of today. Perhaps this can be attributed to the large amount of fan publications being published by PSFS members under the "Comet" banner. In March of 1934 Hugo Gernsback orgarnized the Science Fiction League under the auspices of Wonder Stories. At that time there were but two active Philadelphia fans, Milton A. Rothman and Raymond Peel Mariella. Rothman immediately volunteered to form a Philadelphia chapter of the SFL. After a lapse of several months, Mr. Rothman's chapter finally received its charter, and the initial meeting was held January 14, 1935 with the following members present: Charles H. Bert, Paul Hunter, Raymond Peel Mariella, and Milton A. Rothman. Very little was done during the first few meetings with the exception hat Mr. Mariella mesmerised Rothman, and Paul Hunter lost interest and dropped out. When that occured, there were but three members comprising the PSFL -- and meetings were soon discontinued due to lack of enthusiasm. (5)
