4. for having been doubtful of his activities, and said so, with no better proof than things which had been written to me by other fans. All X now, John? PROVING THAT FANDOM CAN DO SOMETHING WHEN IT TRIES: I do not believe that I am alone in noticing the trend of "Letters to the Editor" these past few months. There is considerably less of the plain unvarnished "It Stinks" variety, and much more of the considered, constructively critical type. Since this is one of those things on which United Fandom has been talking and working, I feel it is a victory for us in our activities -- or at least, a good start in the direction of such a victory. When we get more of Readerdom well acquainted with the aims and activities of Fandom, I believe the tendency will be even greater. At least, this much is an encouragement, at the very least, for us to continue the good fight. WHEREIN I PREACH A LITTLE SERMON: I have, at various times, delivered myself of little sermonettes about the way Fans talk too much about their drinking activities. So now, in my own private journal, I want to enlarge still further on it for the subject has many, many ramifications. Don't get me wrong. I am NOT against drinking. Until the sawbones ordered me to stop, I used to do my share. I like the taste of a good beer or ale, sweet wines, and whiskey high-balls. No, I firmly believe, and will so state, that what a fan does in the line of liquid imbibations, is his own darned business. What I Do object to, is his talking so much about it in the public prints of Fandom. Because, my friends, there are great and far-reaching repercussions of that too-much-talk, that are vastly damaging to Fandom. I cannot see Fandom thus stigmatized, and remain silent. For instance, one would gather, and a lot of new and prospective fans DO so gather, from the various fanzine articles which appear immediately after a convention or conference, that those meetings were little short of drunken orgies or debauches. And we all know, that such is not the truth. The meetings, themselves, have been remarkably free of this. True, after the evening sessions are over, some of the fans go out for a little session of town-painting, and that is all right if they so desire. No one, this writer least of all, would deny them that pleasure if it is a pleasure to them. They are there for a good time. but those are, after all, a small minority of those who attend such meetings. No, all that I object to is the impression getting out that it isn't quite safe or quite decent for a young fellow or a younf lady,
