FANTASIA 23 D.B. THOMPSON 2302 U Street Lincoln Nebr Again the Sage of Salt Creek: "The cover is really swell! I like the shading, giving the appearance of framing. And the Beowulf pictorial is most excellent. Top written items, in no particular order, are Djinn Fizz, which is the best column on the pros I have seen; Hypothesis -- some neat rhyming, and actually a science-fiction poem, albeit a bit on the humorous side; and Let There Be Art. Couldn't find anything I didn't like except the little notice reading your subscription expires with this issue. No, that isn't quite right; I thought you made a durned poor pick for the best story of the quarter award. Frankly, I was bored by your top-story." (Bbbrrrrr!!!) LARRY SHAW 1301 State St Schenectady, NY Comes into the fold: "Thanks a lot for Fantasia. The general format impressed me immensely. The cover was nice. The fiction was very good, and I usually prefer articles in fanzines. Speaking of articles, they were of a very high quality. The pictorial was beootiful, and the other illustrations were all good. Special Mention Dep't: the little cut for Man the Space-Rockets. The letters were interesting, and the editorial gave me the same feeling as Campbell's editorials do...I never like to rate things in order, but I liked Remember, Pictorial, Djinn Fizz, and Let There Be Art, in about that order." J.W. BELL, 81 Winter St. Whitman, Mass Blowing us down with folding money: "This is to acknowledge receipt of Fantasia #2, and a word of appreciation. I like it. A fine cover and a fine pictorial. Hadn't considered Beowulf from the fantasy angle before but am well pleased to have it so shown. Enjoyed Djinn Fizz and want some more. Please keep it coming...Don't like to be cynical, but it seems that friend Waldeyer and a certain sect of prophetic whacks and ol' man Nostradamus would get along swell if they were desert island marooned." ART WIDNER, Jr. P.O. Box #122 Bryantville Mass Editor, Fanfare, Yhos, Stinky: FAPA, NFFF, CFS, NAPA, Strangr Club, Frontier Society, The Poll Cat: "Since drooling apologies seems to be the order of the day, I may as well add my quota of saliva to the mélange -- and herewith bonk my conk in the dust and sprinkle a rightful amount of donkey dung on my bald spot. Really I should have written you about Fantasia #1 because I liked it so much, and Knight kept prodding my reluctant buttocks with sharp postcards, but the Widner inertia is a wonderful thing, and it takes practically a fourth-order ray to swerve me from my chosen rut. But at last here I am...Now for Fantasia: Cover 95. Stick to the small linocuts by all means. Two colors nice. Hope you can afford to keep that up too. (Cover is only part of the mag which is press-printed; that's where the expense comes in) Interior heads and illustrations 95 also...Remember didn't please me particularly. The writing, altho excellent in spots, seemed to be straining too hard for effect, altho that may have been the fault of the idea, which is not at all refreshing. Tremendous secret of the cosmos driving one mad is rather overworked and anyway it takes a Lovecraft and at least 5000 words to put it over properly. Especially without revealing what the secret is: 70. Found Wanting: 90. There isn't much to say except that I liked it. Epic: 85. Good idea, well described. Hypothesis: 80. Clever. Eastern Sketch: 65. Decidedly unfinished, and the meter seems ragged...Rendezvous: 90. I like this impressionistic stuff even if I don't get quite get it at times, but I hope you don't intend to make it a steady policy...Beowulf fine. As long as your pocketbook holds out Fantasia is going to be the best illustrated fanzine on the market...Let There Be Art: Good enough, except he might have praised Rogers a bit, and given Brown due credit for his many excellent Astounding covers before TWS got hold of him and ruined his reputation with pop-eyed monsters and the like: 80...Man the Space-Rockets: 80. De Campian logic -- interesting if true...Djinn Fizz: 70. Seems somewhat icky, but there was a laugh here and there so I forgive him...Odds Bodkins: Rather tepid, but that's to be expected of a first-time readers' column. Boxing the readers' addresses is a neat idea...Give it a 70..."
