The Historical Heritage of La Raza in the Midwest Speakers: George Garcia Louise Ano Nuevo Kerr Alfredo de los Reyes Robert Negreti: For the first workshop of the conference we have three people who are very knowledgeable in the historical heritage of the La Raza in the Midwest. I will now turn over the microphone to George Garcia of the State Department of Public Construction who will introduce the members of this panel & also give you a brief description of this workshop. George George Garcia: Gracias Roberto. Tonight we are speaking or addressing ourselves to the historical heritage of La Raza in Iowa and the Midwest. Two years ago at the 2nd annual conference, I was privileged to make a presentation on the history of the Chicano in Iowa. And at that time I raised some fundamental historical questions about the Chicano in the Midwest. So I'm very pleased taht those who planned the Conference for this year felt taht there was a need to continue on that theme. "What is the historical experience of the Chicano in the Midwest?" Whenever I travel out of the State of Iowa (Spanish language) But they're probably a few that are not from the state. there are Chicanos in the state. We have approx 25 to 30 thousand Chicanos in the state of Iowa, compared to the Midwest in general. The Chicano population in Iowa is smaller. Yet in Iowa we feel that the Chicano Movement, La
