who were mestizos in Iowa, prior to the Anglo even coming to the state. I found that the Spaniard thought Iowa and what is now the Midwest bringing with them the Spanish language bringing with them the Spanish culture. How much of that happened I don't know but it did happen. One of the things that makes Iowans very proud of history is to show that Iowa is the first settlement of the state. They always refer to Julien Dubuque. Yet I found that Julien Dubuque in the Spanish records was Julien Dubuque and he was a Spanish citizen although he came by way of Canada. He was a French Canadian. yet Las Minos Espanades was the name of the mines that he extracted the minerals from in Dubuque.
