KEYNOTE SPEECH April 14, 1973 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. The following remarks of the conference were tape-recorded. They are a summary of the keynote speech given by Jose Angel Gutierrez, National Chairman of La Raza unida party. Founder of MAYO (Mexican American Youth Organization). Chairman of Board of Education in Crystal city, Texas. First Raza party member to be elected to a city governmental post. B.A. University of Texas, Austin; M.A. University of Texas, Austin in sociology. Mr. Gutierrez's topic was: "The Chicano on the Eve of American Century III" RICARDO ZAVALA: Para empezar voy otra ves mas para asi poder un poco mas sentimento entre nosostros mismos. Me llamo Ricardo Zavala. Yo soy el chairman por este ano de la Chicano Indian-American Student union. Vamos empezar lo que tenemos durant esta hora que es lo principal en el sentido de la persona que va hablar y que es lo que va a decir y todo espero que pongamos muchas atenciones un empezar. WILLARD BOYD: (President of the University of Iowa) It's quite clear that this second conference, in what i hope will be a long sustained series, evidences the importance of Chicanos in this part of the country. I learned last year as we have learned throughout the year that this is not just a matter of places in Southwest United States; it is just as important in the Middle West. I would also say that I am impressed by what our Chicano students are doing on this campus _ _ _ their way of reaching out to the state and to the region. This university we have sought to make a commitment to bring differently advantaged students to this campus by not raising the tuituion in the last four years, by continuing to raise our program, the Equal Opportunity Program Support. We are also commited firmly to an affirmative action program which does not include Spanish-Americans, chicanos, as well other minorities and females. We are very much committed; we are very impressed that you are here today and I simply say that for the real point that was mentioned earlier that many people do not think that there is a problem in this state with respect to Chicanos, I do realize it.
