OPENING REMARKS April 13, 1973 8:00 - 8:30 p.m. The opening remarks of the conference were tape-recorded. The remarks below are a summary of the presentation speech given by Jorge Garcia, teacher at Iowa City High School, Iowa City and a Chicano History Professor at the University of Iowa. Mr. Garcia's topic was: "CHICANO EXPERIENCES IN THE MIDWEST" DIANE GUTIERREZ: Raza bien venidos a la confredencia del Chicanos 73 aqui en Iowa City. Queremos que todos tenga un buen tiempo aqui y que nos ayuden hacer esta confrendencia un vien evento. Nosostros estudiantes aqui de la Union de Chicanos y Indios en el espiritue de Atzlan dedecamos esta confrendencia a la gente la raza. Good evening, Raza. Welcome to the Conference, Chicano '73, in Iowa City. We hope you all have a good time here these two days and will help us make this conference a good success. JORGE GARCIA: Me da mucho gusto de ver tanta gente aqui en Iowa. Cada vez que salgo del estado me preguntan de donde soy y les digo que soy de Iowa City, Iowa. Y dicen mira no mas este senor viene de Ohio y les digo no, es Iowa. Asi es que todos los que han venido de otros estados estan en Iowa, no en Ohio. Y si hay Chicanos aqui en Iowa. Estamos creciendo muy rapido. En Iowa para ustedes que no saben cuantos Chicanos hay aqui en este estado. Tenemos, according to el census 1970, 295 Chicanos in the state of Iowa. Most of us that are involved in the Chicano Movement in the state believe that's really an undercount. Probably it is close to 25-30,000. Most of the Chicanos in the state are concentrated in various cities. Des Moines has the largest concentration. Davenport, Mason City, Sioux City, Council Bluffs. Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Fort Madison and other smaller communities, Muscatine, of course the student population here in Iowa City. So, we are distributed throughout the state; we are concentrated in various localities. Tambien tenemos migrantes en el estado. Roughly about 5,000 migrantes pasan por el estado de Iowa cada ano. Sugar beets in the Northwest part of the state. Esparagus in the Northwes part of the state. Tomatoes in Muscatine. Nurseries in the Southwest part of the state make uo the migrant population in the state. So, that there are Chicano organizations in the state. There are various organizations working with the Chicano both the permanent Chicano and the migrant Chicano.
