Minutes of meeting Oct.14, 1979 -- page 2 The Black Alumni Association (BAA) also assists the UI's Afro-American Cultural Center by providing them with an account. Therefore the Center is able to tap resources from the community as well as the BAA. The Iowa Foundation provides administrative assistance as well as housing the funds. The Martin Luther King scholarship was founded by the UI and its monies are housed with the BAA at the Iowa Foundation and are earmarked for students who are identified by EOP and SSS. Three scholarships are awarded, two of which are limited to Afro-American students - one to an athelete and another to a student of outstanding academic achuevement. The third is awarded to any student, wether Afro-American or not, upon recommendation from Special Support Services. Questions were raised concerning the general criteria udes for selecting award recipients. Ms.Jones stated that the first award was based only on academic achievement; the second scholarship, which goes to an athlete may depend on special, or indicidual circumstances. For instance, the athlete may be in his/her fifth year of college with no financial assistance after having used up the four years of athletic scholarship eligibility. The third scholarship is awarded on need or other criteria, depending on the year's prioriries. For example, it could go to a student in dance, or to a political science graduate student who is doing research in an area the Black Alumni Association and Special Support Services deem important and necessary. Ms. Jones also spoke of fund-raising obstacles, citing identification of resource people as the largest. Secondly, she felt, there are difficulties articulating what the Association is about and what are its goals and objectives. Problems also arise in differentiating the purposes and uses of these funds, as opposed to other foundations, so often explanations can be made stronger by identifying services which are made available to members and supporters from the Association.
