1942. Worked in gardens all forenoon Cleaned south room upstairs Telegram from Eleanor Mullen her father Franz Rabbischat died. Wrote her, sent birthday cards to May + Martha, wrote Hans 2 letters! 1943. Stayed up from 5. Took Signe to 7:52 AM train. Middleton to Accotink, Va. to be army nurse in Ft. Belvair. Ironed. Went to Home Ec luncheon in Vocational + saw War Industries training - welding, machine shop, etc. Mrs. RA Walker gave me wild flowers I set out I spaded some in flower garden. 68º 1944. Cooler. Shower which chased the negroes to cover, but didn't help much. Hilda slept late, but got a cold. I made oatmeal cookies, she a rhubarb pie. sig here for day off! She + I went to Mt. Vernon by bus to see rose garden. 55º 70º 1945. Baked bread, waxed kitchen linoleum, read in "Black Boy." 1946. Baked date cookies. Didn't sleep from 3:30 to 6. Kathryn + I packed 1/3 of my trunk. I packed big box from it upstairs. Mrs. W. gave me plants for Signe. Pauline + Laura went to church + dinner. Only K, Hilda + I at apt. Sig working. K, Pauline + I heard Wis Hi orchestra at Music Hall. rainy. Doris + Wayne W came in for late evening call.
