1942. 61 at S.S. We napped + read. Hans + Frank + I went to Madison - no Pauline on bus - no Kathryn at Annie's. 1943 Didn't sleep after 2:15 when Frank came home from his first date, having run out of gas! Began reading "The Robe." Worked in garden till it rained 3 hours or so till noon. Baked bread. Made Woman's Club report. Copied 3 Danish lesson. Spaded a lot in eve. 1944. Ironed 6 shirts. Shopped for graduation gifts - stationary for Ruth Brandt, leather billfold for Charles. Sent Olgas a chromed copper sandwich tray for silver anniversary - took nap. Another troop train passed- 52º 73 1945. 2 troop trains passed! Drove in to get Hilda at G. W. Hospital. K + I did the washing first. 1946. Storm had knocked electricity out - Hilda helped milk! Phone Amanda, Velma, Olga - and all came for supper at Oskar's. Owen wears corrective shoes they got at Iowa City + walks fine. I drove to Maq - no mail. Had lunch at Bayer's. rail strike prevents taking Hans' mother part way to August's. The 17 of us had young fried chicken, etc. for supper. I got shoes in Maquoketa.
