1942. Picked [first?] pies from rows 5 + 6 + gave them + some flowers to the Ray children who have whooping cough. To bank. baked bread + cake made batch of gooseberry jelly + canned 3 pt. Hans wrote he can't leave Washington for 2 more weeks. 1943 Up at 7 to pick beans for dinner and make ice cream. 40 at S. S - Meth. Preacher from Oregon preached. Wayne + Doris here for dinner at 2 - Warm. Prof + Mrs. Roberts + Mary Loud here in eve. 94° 1944. Got more corn + beans from garden, nice apples etc. from market. K. up for breakfast then slept till nearly noon. Hans went off with car key, so I stayed home - Cut out flowered [Ames?] divinity, devised maroon + white ric-rac trim for it. Wrote 2 on porch in AM. 1945 Slept at Velma's. Velma + girls took us to Melba's, there to our old farm. 13 for dinner : Olga + Sondra, Melba + Beverly + Allen. Velma's + [we?]. Chicken, pie, peas, etc. for dinner. Washed uniforms for Frank. Sat under maple in late P.M. Donnie + Amanda took us to Oskar's in '20 model T Ford. 1946. On time at every meal on board the SS "Gen. Gordon". Good food. Just a little dizzy at times. Sat in crowded lounge, in [sun?] [on?] [illegible] with Winifred Allan of Los A. then hap hr or so 1000 Chinese aboard, 3 or 4 Hindus, 324 first class passengers. 12 in our cabin. Community sing in lounge in eve.
