1942 Didn't sleep well - and found I was stiff from [jolt?], left knee bruised + front tooth loose + lip swollen. Phoned about S.S. + 4H picnic arrangements - home alone all day. Read + slept. Sig home at 6 1943. Hot washday. Thru at 10:20. Stemmed gooseberries Dean Davis brought. Wrote Sig, Hans, R.C. + news - Elaine + Delores practised muffin dem. 19[44?] Went to Washington on 9 o'clock bus. Dr. Cox tested my eyes, then I went to Blohm Optical Co. to order glasses. Bot black pair. Home 1:30, nap, picked limas + first tomatoes. Rain in eve. 88° 1945 Dressed 2 young chickens - Dora picked 1. Picked peas + beets in Al's garden lettuce in ours, + helped Jo pick beans in eve. To Ames at 11:30. bought shorts, slacks, [pr.?] tennis shoes + robe for Sig. Sent 1 pkg - Florence + I shopped around in P.M. She brought me home - Florence Byrnes here - society edition Washington Post. 69° 1946 Back to 30° 30'. Beginning to get mild. Fog till late PM. when we saw blue sky again, a shower, then a rainbow. Read all of Pearl Buck's "The Exile". Broke my watch crystal. Me + Mrs. Price, wife of asst. director of UNRRA at Shanghai. Letter from Kathryn!
