Clara Steen Skott diary, 1942-1946

July 29

1942  Darned an hour on Frank's socks, hoed in garden + flower garden, planted spinach, kohlrabi, kale, + turnips.  Rode with K. Schmidt's to Middleton at 7.  Yearbook comm. at Mrs. Meyer's - [Walked?] out by 11:30!
1943.  Slept till 7 - but was awake 2-4.  After almost regular sound sleep this summer.  Canned 11 pt. beans.  Painted back door inside, + second coat on steps.  Made my first dill pickles.
1944.  Baked rolls, oatmeal cookies, + cherry cake.  Too hot to do much.
1945 Had bilious spell - didn't go to church with Rex + Dora.  Began [Oversoettning?] of Hans' Brev til dansk.  flo + Marie came + Flo helped me then we went to her cousin Chris Jensen for more HJoelp!
1946.  Mrs. Lund and I rode to UNRRA on "cheesebox" bus.  She started Chinese lessons, too.  The men in my class have waited here a month to go to Mukden.  After class we had lunch then shopped for postcards + money.  Exchange rate today 2480. (official, 2020).  We had Pedicab ride to Park Hotel.  Shampooed my hair.  Sick in [illegible].
