August 8 4H Garden Exhibit won blue ribbon 1942. Up before 6. Got Thos. Meuer to dig his potatoes for Fair. He, Alice, Shirley, Elynor + I went to Stoughton Fair with Dasch's. We arranged Garden Club exhibit. I came home with Mrs Bell + Mrs. Shaffer. Baked bread, etc. + dressed chicken Hans took out old pump- got car + K home. 1943 Baked apple crisp, cooked chicken- nearly a church full. Came home early from S.S. + we left for Stoughton at 12. Helped with girls' judging contest- Bonnie Ovam getting 1st on canning- stayed for dress revue + vaudeville + fireworks. Took K home. 1944. Finished ironing then drove to Alex. and worked 4 1/2 hrs. on surgical dressing + 100 swabs. Cooler. Alex. chapter made 87,000 surg. dr. in July. 54° 1945. Slept fine at Aunt Addie's. Kitty H + Emily there for another chicken dinner- Telegram from Hans he will arrive "about 12th". Home on bus, sat on suitcase all way to Des M. 2 hr. in Des M. walked to P.O. Phoned D.R. Murphy. To Dora's at 10 P.M. Russia declares war on Japan. 1946 Awake at 4, then slept late. When we saw Rogers, he said "next week". How very discouraging- yet typical of this vast "sleeping giant"- China. Saw Mr. Green at 1, who advised seeing vice-consul McKenna at Am. Consulate, which I did. No use. Ate 1st real meal in 3 days- but still too soon. Telegram from Hans- still in Mukden! Finished reading Hume's "Doctors East Doctors West" which Mrs. Weaver lent me.
