August 10 1942. Kathryn hung huge washing for me. K + I helped Hans lower pipe into well- then he let them all fall in! Had Dr. Muehlmeier lance my infected jaw. 1943. Canned 3 qt. tomato juice, made 2 glasses apple jelly, cream cake, and ironed some. Still hot + dry. Frank here for 4 meals a day! Watered lawn + garden again. 1944. Baked bread. Took nap. takes plenty sleep in this climate. Hans nearly fagged out. Drove to Alex- for cash for Chicago reservations for Frank's furlough. 1945. Japan asks for peace! Awake from 3 on. Rainy AM. Rex + I washed in P.M. I baked bread. Dora mixed + baked a chocolate cake- her first this year. Rex + I walked to Campustown. I sent pajamas + tennis shoes to Sig + cap to Frank. Al's here for supper. Jo took me to Martha's for eve. also at Mrs. Beckers. K phoned from Kokomo. 1946. Went up to UNRRA doctor for more Carbantren- tho almost well but here one has to be prepared for anything. Took books back to Mrs. Weaver; she gave me more, also glass of cold fruit juice. Read most of "Land I Have Chosen", by Ellin Berlin. Hot. Am fighting off a slight cold.
