August 15 1942. Baked bread, did some cleaning. Took honey, roll, + corn to Guild Food Sale + had Doc look at my tooth again. Shortened + narrowed pants for Frank, hemmed my white rayon skirt. 1943. Baked apple crisp + sponge cake. 39 at S.S. Hans + K to church with me. Oskar and bride came about 2:30. We showed them our church; Oskar played ball with Frank _ boys; Had ice cream + cookies, then they went to Adele's + Dells. Rain called off our Circle picnic. H + I went to Rabe's. 92° 1944. Ironed, got veg. from garden, canning sugar from store. Sorted some of Sig's things. Began reading Somerset Maugham's "A Razors' Edge." Still very hot. Sgt. brought another box; Sig went to N.Y. in P.M. he in eve. VJ Day 1945. Did Hans' washing. All stores + offices closed. We went to garden + got 4 ears sweet corn, carrots, tomatoes + beans. Gas rationing off! We drove to Wash. sent telegram to K, at Beatrice's. Took Gladys Baker home with us for supper. We called on the Einar Jensen's in Arlington. Cooler nite. 1946. Rainy morning. At 10 I walked to UNRRA- found exchange low (24100) on $1 bills. FInally got a planet ticket, ATC for Peiping. Acquired $45 in big bills, exchange for 2550! Arranged for jeep at 6:30. Packed. Mrs. Lund is to go to TienTsin by LST and take my trunk. All over cold (slight)- feel fine.
